Boris Groys, Professor at the School of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe and author of Stalin’s Total Work of Art (Hanser, 1988) and Ilya Kabakov (Phaidon Press, 1998).

The conference is chaired by Eric Alliez, Senior Research Fellow at University of Paris IV, and Peter Osborne, Professor of Modern European Philosophy at Middlesex University.

In December 2010 student occupations mushroomed across the UK. On the arts front Arts Against Cuts hosted an action-planning Long Weekend at Goldsmiths Student Union and occupied Tate Britain during the Turner Prize award ceremony. Art students from the Slade School of Fine Art were served a legal injunction and taken to court by their university, following their sit-ins.

Five Years presents This Is Not a School. – A programme of events in
the gallery responding to the phenomenon of the ‘alternative education
project.’ From an open invitation for anyone to propose a one-hour
‘participatory activity’ that questions the ‘Free School’ structure
and its wide ranging history and ethos, all proposals were accepted
and timetabled.
