Woman House

Womanhouse (30 January – 28 February, 1972) was a women-only art installation and performance organized by Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro, co-founders of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Feminist Art Program. Chicago, Schapiro, their students and artists from the local community participated. Chicago and Schapiro encouraged their students to use consciousness-raising techniques to generate the content of the exhibition. Each woman was given a room or space of her own in a 17-room mansion in Hollywood, California

University courses ‘may close’ if student visas cut

cut funding increase fees and the cut educational visa’s good job tories….

Several universities have warned they may be forced to close science and engineering courses if the government limits visas for foreign students.Sixteen university vice-chancellors have written a joint letter to the observer saying the plans would have a profound effect on university income. They want Home Secretary

Theresa May to drop a proposal to restrict visas. She wants to raise the English language requirement and make it harder for people to come to the UK.

The coalition government has committed itself to reducing net migration from 196,000 to the “tens of thousands” by 2015.

Now that it effects two of the STEM subjects they take notice- what about the non existent funding for Art and Humanities?

Manifesta, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art, is a roving, contemporary art event, showcasing the most innovative work by artists and curators from Europe and beyond.

In the early 1990s, Manifesta was launched as a unique, roving art event, a project devised by a Dutch initiative that took shape as the International Foundation Manifesta (IFM), an independent and not-for-profit organisation with offices in Amsterdam. As a response to the political and economic changes brought about by the end of the Cold War and the consequent moves towards European integration, it aspired to provide a dynamic platform that could support a growing network of visual arts professionals throughout the region.

Universities flying in to the dark.

‘Risky and irresponsible’

Much of the money from increased fees will replace funds the government has cut from university teaching budgets.

This will create a much more direct link between how many students choose a course and how much money the university has to run it.

The academics fear that the proposed model, where “the money follows the student”, may end up “depriving some courses of income streams, and decimating the funding for teaching in some institutions, without any coherent and publicly announced policy in regard to which of these institutions and courses the government believes should be left to fail.

The Social Science Centre (Lincoln): a new model for higher and co-operative education

The Social Science Centre (SSC) provides an opportunity for students and academics to have a very special co-operative experience of higher education. All courses at SSC are taught and assessed at the same level as similar courses in mainstream universities in the UK. The courses are taught by experienced academics, including professors and lecturers with national and international reputations based on the quality of their scholarship in the social sciences.

One of the unique features of the Centre is that it is run as a ‘not-for-profit’ workers’ co-operative. The Centre is managed on democratic, non-hierarchical principles with all students and staff having an equal involvement in how the Centre operates
